Sami camp

Sámi camp school

Sámi school camp is a unique and exciting program that gives students an exceptional opportunity to learn about Sámi culture and traditions. Through varied and engaging activities, students gain a deeper understanding of Sámi ways of life and everyday living.

An important part of the school camp program is education about reindeer herding, which is a central element of Sámi culture and economy. Students learn how reindeer herding works—from calving and marking the animals to moving the herds and slaughtering. This gives them valuable insight into the important role reindeer herding plays in Sámi society

Among other things, we can offer this:

The Sami school camp begins by introducing students to Sami culture and society. They learn about Sami history, traditions, traditional knowledge, and the importance of reindeer herding in Sápmi. Through storytelling around the fire in the lavvu, students hear about the seasons, everyday life, and the close relationship between people, animals, and nature. This provides a warm and meaningful starting point for the week’s activities.

A central part of the school camp experience is the encounter with the reindeer. Students take part in feeding and caring for the animals, learning about their needs, characteristics, and behavior. Through practical tasks and calm, guided interactions, the students get close to the animals in a safe and respectful way. They also experience the taming of reindeer calves, learning how trust is built and how a bond is formed with young animals.

This offers a unique understanding of the traditional relationship between humans and reindeer in Sami culture.

Sami handicraft – duodji – is an important learning arena. Students try traditional techniques and materials and create their own small products that give insight into the aesthetic, practical, and cultural significance of duodji across generations.

For many students, being out in nature becomes a highlight. They may try freshwater fishing during the warmer seasons or ice fishing during winter. They learn about local fish species, fishing techniques, and sustainable harvesting, and enjoy the accomplishment of preparing their own catch. In winter, students can also participate in reindeer sledding in the Siida area, a traditional and peaceful way to travel across the snowy landscape. Sliding downhill on reindeer skins is another fun and safe activity that provides excitement and laughter for the group.

Bonfire gatherings are an essential part of the experience. Whether outside by the fire pit or inside the lavvu, students come together around the fire to eat, share stories, reflect on their day, and enjoy the sense of community that the fire creates.

Throughout the week, students learn by doing. They take part in practical tasks, animal interactions, outdoor activities, and cultural storytelling. All of this gives them a deeper understanding of Sami culture and society, while also creating lifelong memories and strengthening the bonds within the group.
